Former method of steelmaking, now largely
superseded by the basic-oxygen process. The
open-hearth furnace was developed in England
by German-born William and Friedrich Siemens,
and improved by Pierre and Emile Martin 1864.
In the furnace, molten pig iron and scrap are
packed into a shallow hearth and heated by
overhead gas burners using preheated air.
